The Chick or the Egg, Things I have learned

Night Owl

I have had an incubator now for about a year and by trial and error I have learned a few things.  I thought I would share.
  1. Wash your eggs with dish soap.  Without cleaning with a anti microbial soap I had very low hatch rates.  But when I wash the eggs with dish soap then rinse well I had super good hatch rates for example 29 out of 33 eggs last week.
  2. When hatching mixed batches of duck and chicken eggs put your duck eggs in the icubator 1 week before the chicken eggs.  I killed my first batch of duck eggs when the chicken eggs hatched and I had the incubator open.
  3. I put a cup of water in the incubator for increased humidity.  When they are hatching if they do not get out quick then the membrane drys and effectively locks them in the egg.  The added humidity slows that drying process.  The humidity trays in the bottom of the incubator are not enough.
  4. Chicks can wear themselves out trying to hatch thru a hard egg shell!!!  Some chicks just pop right out a few minutes after they break thru with the first hole.  Others can lag on for hours with that inside membrane drying and then die before they can hatch.  At first I was afraid to "help" them and I had several half hatched chicks die.  Now my rule is if they have a hole open to air for more than 4 hours then I break a line with my thumb nail all the way around the end of the egg just like when they do it naturally.  Then the chick can stretch and pop out comes the chick.  They do not bleed this way and they survive well.  I lost one this last week out of 29 hatched chicks.
  5. Ducks drop their eggs all over.  It is like an easter egg hunt every day around here.  It is like they are walking, drop and egg and keep on walking.  I have found duck eggs in the strangest of places!!!
  6. The poultry industry has worked with genetics to get big eggs, big breasts etc but they have done gone and bred all of the brains right out of chickens.  They will NOT go broody to save my life or theirs!!!  If anybody has any ideas on how to kick start them then please share.....
  7. Eggs make great balls!!!   Just ask our Pug!!!!!
  8. Pigs will do anything for an egg.  Including walk straight across a field to go get in the stock trailer.  Poor Pork Chop had no idea where that stock trailer was then going to!!!  We get him back from the butcher today or tomorrow and are planning a ham dinner in celebration of his home coming!!!  He was our first to raise and get off to the butcher...  He was 240lbs on the hoof and dressed out at 173lbs....

If there is yarn then we will be warm!

I had not done crochet in over 20 years when I picked back up the hooks and got busy.  Yarn can be spun fairly easily using a drop spindle and wool or angora hair if Wal-Mart ceased to exist.  But for now I will buy it.  Crochet or knitting are good skills to have.  They can be useful in a survival situation if there is an extended grid down period.  Yarn is something easily stocked up on in your preps when it goes on sale or from thrift shops.  I have bought a lot of yarn at yard sales and such for just a few cents.  It doesn't have an expiration date and can be kept in a plastic tote.  As long as it is dry and rodent proof is all you need to store it.

Our newest member.. Meet Brisket

He's not a big angus but this little fellow was only $100.  Around here if you can find bottle calves they usually want 300 or so for a meat cow like an Angus.  So I am happy with the one I got.   He is a Jersey crossed with something bovine.
Brisket coming home
We drove to Missouri to get him and brought him back in the back of our Jeep.

He is a bossy little bugger.  And it seems like a bottle puts him into Hungry mode.  After I feed him then he nudges me in the back side and chases the goats and even the horse around trying to get more.

A few days after we got him both of his testicles dropped and I was able to get a band on him with the help of my daughter holding him.

I will up date with more pictures as soon as I get them...

Firearms laws of our colonies and today

Our original colonies and founding fathers knew how important it was to own firearms.  Many of the colonies even required all able bodied families to own a firearm or be taxed.

One brave individual has petitioned the government to pass the same kind of law.  Many people would say that it  is unconstitutional to tax someone for not wanting to own a firearm. But I believe it is in the same as forcing people to have health insurance or be taxed (pay a penalty) or have car insurance, car tags etc.  You know all of those things that the gov requires us to purchase.

Below is a copy of the petition.  If you believe as I in the right to keep and bear arms.  If you believe in a need to go back to our constitutional roots.  Then please sign the petition and pass it along to every one you can the petition needs 100,000 signatures by February 17th in order to get an audience.  Strange that most only required 25,000 in 30 days and they quadrupled the requirement for this one.  They have a long way to go......  The link to click is at the very bottom of the article...

Project Amendment 28 - Require Firearms Ownership

In order to provide for the security of the individual, state and general well-being of the country, all able bodied individuals shall be required to own one modern firearm and ten rounds of associated ammunition.
Individuals are required to receive firearms training. Exceptions shall be made for those adjudicated mentally ill, convicted of a crime of domestic violence, a felony, or have been separated from the military with a Dishonorable Discharge.
Individuals that are fundamentally opposed to owning a firearm shall be taxed and each year shall register with the government as firearms objectors until age 62 or until proven by a medical doctor to be unable to operate a firearm.
If an individual is unable to purchase a firearm one shall be provided by the Federal Government.

A picture is worth a thousand words or a million in this case

Here we are in a modern day country with many historical events repeating themselves. Take this one for example!!!

About what our "president" is trying to do to our rights... My opinion...

Propaganda defined:
  1. publicity to promote something: information put out by an organization or government to promote a policy, idea, or cause
  2. misleading publicity: deceptive or distorted information that is systematically spread
Is what our government spreading distorted or deceptive information?
I would say yes.  The definition of an assault or military rifle according to the BATF is a weapon with a selective fire switch which allows the shooter to "switch" the weapon over to full automatic or bursts.  Our military uses these such weapons and has been illegal for just anyone to own since 1968.  I would hate to see what would happen if our military had to use the kind of weapons that we can purchase right now.  We would probably not win a battle against a third world country!!!

The weapons that the government is touting as "assault" weapons are not that at all.  They are only semiautomatic which means you must pull the trigger for every shot.  A Ruger 10/22 is just that type of gun and can be dressed up with plastic furniture to resemble a military M16 rifle but it is still just a 10/22 underneath.  That is similar to the kits that were sold in the late 70's for VW bugs.  You could take the body off and replace it with a replica Ferrari or Lamborghini body.  Did that turn that vehicle into a Lamborghini?  No it was still a Volkswagen underneath.  I could put on a princess dress, fix my hair and put on make-up, Would that make me a princess?  No still just a tom boy that feeds chickens, goats and pigs everyday underneath.
So to lump all the look alike's in with the real thing is pretty ignorant of the masses.  They are uneducated and misinformed... Propaganda has done this misinforming.

History has taught us that a tyrannical government must first disarm the masses before they can take over.  This was shown to be quite effective with the reign of Hitler in Nazi Germany starting with the "Gun Control act of 1938".

Our Second amendment:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Now alot of people would argue that the term "militia" would mean only the military.  But in the times of the colonies it had a very different meaning.  This was essentially every free, white male (not being racist, this was the thought process back then).

At the time that the constitution was ratified many of the colonies had laws that forced EVERY HOUSEHOLD to be armed and if you did not have a weapon you could be fined.  Virginia passed a law that stated you must go to church on the sabbath and you must bring your gun to church with you.

Our forefathers recognized that a well armed home would be a safer home since criminals will always prey on the ones that can not or are less likely to be able to defend themselves.  To make my point:
Has anyone heard of a crazy man going in and shooting up a local sheriffs office?
No... The criminals always go to places that they know will not be armed and will be an easy target.  They always go to known "gun free" zones.  This is where they will meet with the least resistance and have the best chance of carrying out their evil plans.

Obviously crime rates have not gone down with decreasing the ability to own weapons.  For example in New York City where it is pretty much illegal to own guns:
For the first week of this year:
Murder 7
Rape 31
Robbery 384
Felony assault 353
Burglary 329
grand larceny 760

How about Washington DC where it is totally illegal to own a gun:
Murder rate is 650% of national average
Rape 121%
Robbery 481%
Assault 288%
Burglary 104%
Larceny 141%
Motor vehicle theft 383%

Looks like gun control has worked well for them....  NOT!!!!!

Here is an entire years worth of date from the entire state of North Carolina which allows permissive open carry:
2010 Crime (Actual Data)*Incidents
Aggravated Assault2,796
Arson247
Burglary9,325
Forcible Rape239
Larceny and Theft22,711
Motor Vehicle Theft2,665
Murder and Manslaughter61
Robbery1,795

They are as an entire state less than the national average.  They are very close by Washington DC and New York in terms of location which is why I used them as an example.

And I can only imagine how Obama's hometown of Chicago ranks with all of their gun control and crime!!!!!

So my point is:  The politicians need to grow a brain cell.  Look at the statistics.  Quit with all of the Nazi type Propaganda and follow our constitution.  And really???? Hiding behind a bunch of kids (Obama with the kids at his speech) in hopes of pulling heart strings... That was about as low as it gets.  Maybe he should stand next to car wreck survivors and ask to ban all of the cars in the country!!!  Or plane wreck victims families...
Does he really think that a 10 year old would have the knowledge of what an assault rifle really is?  And why should all the adults in the country think that either?  Would they have a kid tell them how they should do their budget??? Yet they are going to have a kid tell them how to control crime????

Hitler disarmed his country before taking over... He knew they could not fight back without weapons...  Are we going to turn into the modern day Nazi Germany?  Run by a tyrannical leader that first disarms the population, has the constitution changed so that he can run a 3rd term or maybe longer.  Uses his executive power to do pretty much as he wills and threatens our congress if they do not bow to  his wishes.
Hitler was a smooth talker that slowly manipulated the people into thinking he was the messiah born again.  History always repeats itself... Does it not???

This is my opinion.  I am sure there are many that would disagree and I will right now agree to disagree with you folks... For the minute I still have the freedom of speech but I am sure that one is on the list also to remove!
